Our Story

At Forensic Investigation and Consultation, no case is too complicated for us to handle. With over 75 years of combined experience in fire and explosion investigations, each team member has travelled extensively throughout the world investigating and managing large scale fires and explosions.  We have provided training and consultation to local, state, federal, and international agencies.  All of our Principals are retired ATF Certified Fire Investigators and Certified Explosives Specialist, considered the most rigorous Certification Programs in the world.  You know you are getting the very best in investigation, consulting and training.

Jeff Key

Principal - Senior Investigator/Consultant

Jeff Key is a founding member and Senior Fire Investigator/Consultant of Forensic Investigation & Consultation, LLC (FORINCON) a company that provides expert investigations and consultations as well as training/education regarding fire and explosion losses.
Jeff Key is a retired Special Agent/Certified Fire Investigator/Certified Explosive Specialist (SA/CFI/CES), with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) with specialized training in origin and cause of fires was well as post blast investigations.  Additionally, he received training as a Hazardous Materials Technician/Specialist from the Environmental Protection Agency and became a Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) by the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI).  As a SA/CFI/CES he conducted origin and cause investigations regarding fire losses and post blast/explosions.  The origin and cause investigations included commercial/industrial, to include large losses; residential and vehicle fires.  The post blast/explosion investigations included commercial/industrial, residential and vehicle which included accidental explosions such as fugitive gas and dust as well as intentional/criminal explosions including military/commercial explosives and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).  He has testified as an expert in origin and cause of fires in United States District Court, State Court and United States Military Court.  He retired after 30+ years in law enforcement, to include 14 years as a SA/CES and 12 years in the SA/CFI program.
After retirement from ATF Jeff Key joined Forensic Fire Analysis, LLC, as an Associate/Senior Fire Investigator where he conducted origin and cause investigations regarding fire losses as well as explosion investigations.  Additionally, he consulted on and provided training/education regarding fire and explosion investigations.  After 5+ years with Forensic Fire Analysis, LLC, he left to form Forensic Investigation & Consultation, LLC, with Ken Andrews and John Golder, both retired SA/CFI/CES, ATF.  He continues to provide expert investigation regarding fire and explosion losses with a specialty in large loss as well as explosion investigations.  Additionally, he continues to consult and provide training/education regarding fire and explosion investigations.
Jeff Key has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham and has completed additional study at the University of Maryland, University College.   Additionally, he has received over 4,000 hours of specialized training in investigations, origin and cause as well as post blast investigations.

Ken Andrews

Principal - Senior Investigator/Consultant

Ken Andrews is a founding member of Forensic Investigation and Consultation, LLC, (ForInCon).  Ken is an International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) as well as a National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI) Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator and Certified Fire Investigation Instructor (CFII).  He is also a certified Hazardous Materials Technician/Specialist (HAZWOPPER).
Ken retired from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) after 28 years of service, the last 16 of which he spent as a Certified Fire Investigator.  Ken was also a member of ATF’s elite National Response Team (NRT) and an ATF Certified Explosives Specialist for 18 years.   Ken was a member of ATF’s International Response Team (IRT) that travelled internationally, at the request of the U.S. State Department, to assist in large explosion and fire investigations throughout the world.  He has conducted investigations of large-scale losses involving both fires and explosions, often as lead CFI, throughout the United States and internationally. 
Ken has received extensive training in all aspects of fire and explosion investigations.   He has conducted investigations related to fire and explosions involving vehicles and residences as well as large industrial and commercial scenes.  Ken has also instructed fire and explosion investigators nationally and internationally.  During his career with ATF, he was a regular instructor at the National Fire Academy, Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and the International Law Enforcement Academy in Bangkok, Thailand.
Ken is a past- President of the North Carolina Chapter of the IAAI and has served on the Training Committee for the Chapter for over a decade.  In 2016 he was appointed to sit on the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission. 
Ken has a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Houston.  He has completed additional study in Fire Science though the University of Maryland.
